The World Health Organization defines mental health as a "a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community". A person's mental health is equally as important as a person's physical health and together they make up a person's overall health. A common misconception is that poor mental health is interchangable with a mental illness, but they are not the same thing. A person can have a mental illness and experience periods of good mental health and a person with poor mental health does not always have a mental illness.
According to the World Health Organization, "the consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults".
